This Substack was launched with a simple goal: to produce fearless, independent journalism on medicine, science, and public health—free from interference, censorship, or corporate funding.
For almost two decades, I’ve published investigations that have broken news, challenged powerful institutions, and helped shape public debate.
Some of you have already taken out a paid subscription—thank you. But I’ve noticed many subscriptions have lapsed, often due to expired credit cards or missed renewal reminders. Others may have intended to subscribe but simply forgot. If that’s you, I’d be grateful if you’d consider re-subscribing today.
So far, I’ve made most of my work freely available because I believe this journalism needs to be read. But increasingly, I’m seeing it republished elsewhere without permission—and in some cases, plagiarised.
It’s becoming harder to sustain. I’m trialling different options, and going forward, more articles will be placed behind a paywall. I know that may frustrate some readers—I’ve heard your concerns when articles are locked—but please understand: this is my income.
I’m grateful for the support I’ve received through fellowships from the Brownstone Institute and investigative commissions from journals like The BMJ. But those opportunities are short-term and unpredictable. They don’t cover the ongoing costs of producing this work, and they’re not commensurate with a salary.
Many of the larger Substacks have funding for staff. I don’t—it’s just me.
If you’ve valued the stories I’ve broken—if you’ve shared them, cited them, learnt from them, or relied on them—please consider becoming a paid subscriber, or gifting a subscription to someone else, or upgrading your current subscription to a founding membership.
Just a few dollars a month helps keep this work going. It’s not about charity. It’s a vote of confidence—a way to say: this matters.
Thanks for reading, and for supporting my work.

Maryanne,
I have upgraded my subscription from regular to Founding. You are worth every penny. Amazing work you put out. You are really one of the pioneers in this space and do not get adequate credit for it. 'Was glad you made it to one of the Brownstone events -- in person you were even better than on paper...and you are amazing there. Many thanks for all you do.
The Best Australian journalist bar none.
And you were sacked for telling the truth about statins at the corrupt ABC...
